USAC NON-WING SPRINTS EASTERN STORM KICKS OFF AT GRANDVIEW TUESDAY, 7 AND LINCOLN SPEEDWAY WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8
Must See Event Brings USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series to the East Coast
BECHTELSVILLE, PA (June 2, 2016) – Three-wide racing action all the time, thrilling slide jobs plus rim-riding the guardrail and plenty of wheelie action is just a normal show for the USAC non-wing sprint cars and they will open the Eastern Storm at Grandview Speedway on Tuesday night, June 7. The leanest and meanest racers from USAC’s AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series – the nation’s largest group of non-wing open-wheel racers – make their annual stop on the east coast for the 2016 version of Eastern Storm, a five-race series touring through Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Action kicks off on Tuesday, June 7 at Bechtelsville, PA’s Grandview Speedway as part of NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series. The Annual Jesse Hockett Classic includes a 40-lap, $6,000 to win USAC Wingless Sprint Car event along with the power NASCAR 358 Modifieds – a Grandview Speedway mainstay. Hockett, a two-time USAC feature winner at Grandview, lost his life in a garage accident in 2010. Hockett was recognized as one of the top competitors in USAC and as a driver, he did not reach his full potential at the time of his death. Non-wing or racing a sprint car with a wing, Jesse Hockett was a success. His style on the track and friendly smile will long be remembered. The Thunder on the Hill Racing Series salutes this legend to our sport.
The NASCAR 358 Modifieds will compete in a series of qualifying events leading up to a $3,000 to win 30 lap feature event.
Defending Jesse Hockett Classic winner, Chase Stockon of Fort Branch, Indiana currently sits third in the series points standings and has finished in the top-10 in eight of the twelve events completed. The 28-year-old driver has proven he knows the quick way around the Bechtelsville, PA 1/3-mile dirt oval – capturing the 2014 edition of the Jesse Hockett Classic besting a hard charging Jon Stanbrough and two rain delays.
The Eastern Storm Tour continues into Abbottstown, PA’s Lincoln Speedway on Wednesday, June 8 with a double header of USAC Wingless action. A full show is on the agenda, along with a make-up event from 2014. $6,000 is up for grabs in the first 30-lap feature event, while the second feature – with a full field invert – will offer an additional $3,000. The show also includes the Lincoln Speedway 358 Winged Sprint Cars in a full points event paying $1,000 to win the 20 lap feature.
In 2014, Dave Darland earned the fast qualifier award at Lincoln with a time of 15.174 – a new track record. An ultra-fast racing surface led to a lot of wheel standing down the Lincoln Speedway straight-a-ways with the top-9 cars besting the previous track record. Seven-time USAC National Champion, Levi Jones was the winner both times the Eastern Storm invaded the Lincoln Speedway in 2010 and 2011.
Current series points leader, Brady Bacon of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma leads the east coast charge with a streak of top-5 finishes that dates back six races. Bacon, the 2015 Eastern Storm series champion, holds a 17-point lead over California native Thomas Meseraull. ‘T-Mez’ claimed his first two career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car feature victories in consecutive events near the end of the 2015 season and holds one win to date.
Nine different drivers hold wins in 2016 and with the variety of tracks that Eastern Storm brings anything is bound to happen.
